Key takeaways
  • Measure the base of your finger, in the evening, three times, and take the average.
  • Use the chart below to convert millimetres into a US, UK or EU ring size.
  • Wide bands need about half a size more than thin bands.
  • Buying a gift and unsure? Choose an adjustable ring.

Find your measurement in the middle columns, then read across to your size. Sizes are standard conversions; check a brand's own guide if it gives one.

How to measure your ring size at home

Method 1: String or paper strip (most accurate at home)

1
Cut a strip
Cut a strip of paper or string about 10 cm long.
2
Wrap it
Wrap it around the base of the finger you will wear the ring on.
3
Mark it
Mark the point where the end meets the strip with a pen.
4
Measure
Lay the strip flat on a ruler and read the length in millimetres.
5
Match
Find that number in the circumference column of the chart.

Method 2: Measure a ring you already own

Pick a ring that fits the right finger well. Place it on a ruler and measure the inside width from edge to edge in millimetres, then match it to the diameter column. This only works if the ring is round and not worn out of shape.

Method 3: Print a ring sizer or ask a jeweller

A printable ring sizer works if you print it at 100% scale, with no “fit to page”. A local jeweller can size you for free in under a minute.

Tips for an accurate size

Do
  • Measure in the late afternoon or evening.
  • Measure three times and average the result.
  • Check that the ring can slide over your knuckle and still feel snug at the base.
  • Go up half a size for wide bands.
Avoid
  • Measuring when your hands are cold, wet or swollen.
  • Using a stretched or worn old ring as the guide.
  • Pulling the string tight; it should sit snug but not squeeze.
  • Guessing a gift size from someone else's different finger.
Good to know
Fingers change with temperature, salty food, exercise and time of day. If your size sits between two sizes, choose the larger one for a wide band and the smaller one for a thin band.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common women's ring size?
In the US the most common women's sizes are 6 and 7, but fit depends on finger and knuckle size, so measure your own.
Should I size up or down if I am between sizes?
Go up if your knuckle is wide or the band is wide. Go down for a thin band on a slender knuckle.
What if I do not know my size?
An adjustable ring fits a range of sizes, so it is a safe choice for gifts when you cannot check.
When is the best time of day to measure?
Late afternoon or evening, when fingers are warm. Fingers can be a little smaller in the cold and larger in the heat.
Does the width of the band change the size I need?
Yes. A wide band feels tighter than a thin one, so many people go up a half size for wide bands.
